23 April 2010 Recognition of general practice as a specialty

As part of the move to a national system of registration, the Medical Board of Australia has now confirmed that general practice is formally recognised as a medical specialty. We are pleased with this recognition after many years of advocacy by the college. This is exciting news for the future of our profession and evidence of the increasing status of general practice. We are proud to be generalists – our specialty is whole person, comprehensive and continuing care rather than just the management of a limited number of diseases or conditions. Acknowledgement as a specialist is an important step toward the ongoing challenge of proper recognition and reward for our role.
