The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners

30 April 2010 College of GPs welcomes government anti-smoking action

The college congratulated the Federal Government for its commitment in providing a comprehensive antismoking package, which will increase the tobacco excise by 25% and introduce plain packaging for tobacco products. This move is an important step to ensure that smoking rates continued to decline. In particular, we welcome the cigarette price increases to be introduced by the government, as this has been shown to be effective in cutting smoking rates, especially among young people. This is a great time to refresh our smoking cessation advice for ourselves, and our teams. As GPs we know that spending just a few minutes talking to patients about quitting smoking makes a real difference. Helpful information can be found in the RACGP’s Smoking cessation guidelines for Australian general practice at www.racgp.org.au/guidelines/smokingcessation and the RACGP SNAP guide at www.racgp.org.au/guidelines/snap.
