The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners

14 May 2010 The importance of the doctor-patient relationship

This week, Australia’s first public nurse-led walk-in centre was officially launched in Canberra.

The College strongly supports a strengthening role for nurses in general practice, including an expanded role for nurse practitioners working within general practice teams. However, we do not support the concept of an independent primary care nurses working in parallel rather than as part of general practice teams. No health professional should be working in isolation; all should be part of a team or network with appropriate supervision and clinical governance.

It will be essential that care delivered through these and other similar services are delivered in collaboration with the patients usual GP. Without this collaboration, patient care is put at risk.
