It is with great sadness that I write that Emeritus Professor Charles Bridges-Webb AO passed away this week.
Professor Bridges-Webb had been a member of the College since 1959, and has been an inspiration and a wise mentor for generations of general practice researchers in Australia. He has been awarded both the Rose Hunt and Life Fellowship of our College and was Director of the NSW&ACT Faculty's research unit until 1 June 2010.
Professor Bridges-Webb has also been recognised by the Australian Association for Academic Primary Care through Life Membership and by the World Organization of Family Doctors through Fellowship, the most prestigious award of the international organisation awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding service to primary care and family medicine at a global level. In his biography, To Travel Hopefully, Charles has shared his philosophy of medicine and his approach to medical research – a wonderful story of a wonderful life.
Perhaps Charles' greatest recognition is in the deep affection held by so many GPs both in Australia and overseas. The College is collating tributes acknowledging the contributions of Professor Bridges-Webb to the College and general practice. Please email tributes to richard.lawrance@racgp.org.au or post them to PO Box 534 North Sydney 2060.
We extend our sympathies to Professor Bridges-Webb's wife, Anne, and family.
M5 encourages men and those who care about them to recognise the importance of men forming an ongoing relationship with a GP.
