After many years of advocacy by the College and other general practice groups for better GP supervisor support, the College warmly welcomed an announcement by the Federal Government earlier this week that they will increase the allowance payable to GPs who supervise doctors enrolled in general practice training by 20%. The increased funding will begin on 1 July 2010 and follows a government commitment earlier this year to increase the number of general practice training places by 2014.
With the doubling of medical student numbers, and the increasing emphasis on community based medicine, general practice will be teaching significant higher numbers of medical students, interns, registrars – often for longer periods – than previously. Investment in general practice supervisors, including student supervisors, is critically important to combat general practice workforce shortages throughout Australia and to ensure high quality and appropriate community based experiences for GPs of the future.
