09 July 2010 RACGP signs e-health agreement with Telstra

Following the passing of the Healthcare Identifiers Bill, 2010 through federal parliament, the e-health rollout has finally received the green light and the College is happy to announce its latest e-health initiative in partnership with Telstra.

The College has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Telstra to deliver a suite of national e-health solutions and services to our GP members, giving general practice the opportunity to access high quality and relevant healthcare applications through a web hosted service to improve the quality of care we can deliver to our patients. To read the media release, please visit www.racgp.org.au/media.

This is a very exciting opportunity for general practice. A web based solution will mean GPs can access applications from anywhere – from their practices, homes, hospitals or aged care facilities. The RACGP and Telstra will now work together to deliver a suite of services that meet the needs of GPs and provide real value for practices.

The web hosted service will have the capacity to host multiple healthcare applications including clinical software programs, decision support tools for diagnosis and management, care plans, referral tools, e-prescribing tools, and a range of online training and other administrative and clinical services.

This new service will also have benefits for application providers who will be able to bring their innovations to general practice efficiently and instantly.

The future of modern healthcare services will be supported by the ability of GPs to adapt to new technology. The College and Telstra believe that web based technology will be the future for GPs delivering efficient, high quality and safe healthcare to the community.

It is anticipated that a range of applications will be available to RACGP members from July 2011. The College will consult with members and stakeholders to decide on priority healthcare applications for the profession. We are keen to hear members’ views.
