06 November 2009 Bowel Cancer Screening Program resumes following test concerns

The government resumed screening under the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program on 2 November 2009. People who took part in the program between 1 December 2008 and 11 May 2009 are being offered the opportunity to retake the screening test. Screening was temporarily suspended in May following identification of a problem with the faecal occult blood test (FOBT) being used. The FOBT used during this time returned a lower than expected positivity rate. A replacement FOBT has been listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. People who tested positive have been advised that they should act on these results with further follow up with their GP. For information visit www.cancerscreening.gov.au or telephone 1800 118 868.
