13 November 2009 GPs – key educators in prevention of diabetes

Prevention and education are the focus of the 2009 World Diabetes Day, which is tomorrow, Saturday 14 November.

Research predicts that one in seven Australians will have type 2 diabetes by 2050. It is clear that GPs, who consult with more than 85% of Australians annually, will be key players in avoiding a potential national health crisis.

The college welcomes the excellent work Diabetes Australia is doing to raise community awareness of this issue. It is crucial that we continue to work with such specialist organisations in the delivery of preventive health care.

Central to the World Diabetes Day message is the call to GPs to encourage patients at risk of developing type 2 diabetes to take up the Life! Course.
