The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners

27 November 2009 Registration standards for medical practitioners

Earlier this week the RACGP provided the Medical Board of Australia with recommendations in relation to the registration standards for medical practitioners.

The college is pleased that the Medical Board of Australia proposes that general practice will be a recognised specialist field of medicine under the new structure.

General practice is already recognised as a medical specialty by the Australian Medical Council, as approved by the Minister for Health and Ageing. Visit www.amc.org.au/images/Recognition/AMC-list-of-specialties.pdf.

Discussions within this submission have been made in response to the ‘Consultation paper on registration standards and related matters’ including: criminal history, English language skills, professional indemnity insurance, continuing professional development, recency of practice, and proposed list of specialties and specialist titles.

The Medical Board of Australia consultation paper is available at www.ahpra.gov.au/documents/consultation_papers/Medical%20Board%20of%20Australia.pdf.
