11 December 2009 Impacts of new privacy legislation on general practice

The General Practice Data Governance Council met in Canberra this week and was briefed about the proposed new Privacy legislation and what impacts this will have on general practice. One component of this discussion related to the draft Healthcare Identifiers Bill enabling unique healthcare identifiers for Australians.

The college is developing our response to the draft Healthcare Identifiers Bill. The draft bill and the supporting document, Building the foundation for an e-health future…update on legislative proposals for healthcare identifiers, are available at www.health.gov.au/ehealth/consultation or by calling 02 6289 3919. We would welcome comment from members on the draft legislation by 24 December at healthreform@racgp.org.au.
