The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners

22 January 2010 Update on the mental health skills training

The sheer volume of GPs who wanted to register and/or wanted to do the accredited mental health skills training was overwhelming and the process was a huge undertaking. The college is aware that some doctors had their claims for Item 2170 (mental health skills training) rejected. Medicare Australia has informed the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaborative (GPMHSC) that all coding has been completed for those GPs reported to Medicare up to 13 January 2010 for the purpose of being eligible to claim Item number 2710. If you have verified your mental health skills status and a claim has been rejected from 1 January 2010, please resubmit this claim. For any questions please call GPMHSC on 03 8699 0554. Training undertaken after 31 December 2009 will be reported to Medicare Australia in the last week of January and, thereafter, on a monthly basis. The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing developed a second factsheet outlining details regarding registration with Medicare. The factsheet is available at www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/mental-ba-fact2. The RACGP is working closely with the GPMHSC and Medicare Australia to clarify any outstanding issues.
