The RACGP is pleased that the Senate Inquiry has endorsed the Health Legislation Amendment (Midwives and Nurse Practitioners) Bill, 2009, and the two related Bills that support the government’s amendments to the Bill, to support collaboration. It is good news that this legislation has been endorsed and we are certainly heading in the right direction. However, there is still a lot to be worked out to ensure that the secondary legislation supports the central role of general practice in primary health care.
The Australian Medical Association together with The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has been supportive of the government’s amendments that will require midwives and nurse practitioners to work in formal collaborative arrangements with medical practitioners.
