The college, through our National Rural Faculty, has long advocated for better locum support for rural and remote GPs. This is why the RACGP is very pleased that the Department of Health and Ageing has funded a new initiative: the Rural Locum Education Assistance Program (LEAP).
This program will be piloted in 2010 and administered in conjunction with the Rural Procedural Grants Program (formerly titled the Training for Rural and Remote Procedural GPs Program). Places are capped at 15 in the current financial year. Applications will be assessed on a first in, first served basis.
This is a fantastic initiative and we urge GPs to utilise the program. Grants are available to urban GPs who undertake emergency medicine training and commit to a 4 week rural GP locum placement within a 2 year period. Successful applicants will be able to receive financial assistance to access skills maintenance and upskilling for up to 3 days of emergency medicine training at a rate of $2000 per day.
For more information on this important program, visit www.racgp.org.au/ff/12 or call Pauline Curtis on 1800 636 764 or 08 8267 8351.
M5 encourages men and those who care about them to recognise the importance of men forming an ongoing relationship with a GP.
