26 February 2010 National Registration and Accreditation Scheme for health professions

A new legislation to support implementation of a national system of registration and accreditation of 10 health professions was introduced into Parliament earlier this week. The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme aims to reduce red tape, increase standards, improve safety for the Australian community and increase workforce shortage. Legislation is required to be introduced into each state and territory. The RACGP has always supported the concept of national registration. However, the college remains concerned regarding a number of issues relating to national accreditation, including increased government control over standards, mandatory medical practitioner reporting of peers, and continuing inconsistency between the states, which undermine the very purpose of a national scheme. The college is continuing to work with the government and Medical Board of Australia regarding these issues.
